My Dreams For You

My sweet Luke,

You’ve fallen asleep in my arms and I can’t help but stare at your adorable, smooshy little face as you’re snuggled up to me. I wish I could somehow freeze this moment and keep it forever because I know all too well that I’m going to blink and you’ll be grown, and that realization almost takes my breath away.

Slowly but surely, you’re going to become more independent and you won’t always need me the way you do now, it’s happening already. I look forward to seeing all of the amazing things you’re going to do, but oh how I long to keep the simplicity of the way things are now, to linger longer in these sweet days of motherhood. I have so many prayers, dreams, and wishes for you, Lukey man; and I can’t wait to see what you pray for, dream up and wish for yourself.

As for me, I pray that you always know your value and your worth. I pray that you dream big - that you realize you are so full of potential and you have the ability to do incredible things. I pray that your life is full of happiness and joy and that you are surrounded with friends who love you, appreciate you, include you, and see you as an equal. Most of all Luke, I pray for you to have strength and courage to chase after the dreams on your heart; that you would see Down Syndrome not as a barrier, but as a gift - something that sets you apart and gives you a uniquely beautiful view of life. And finally, I pray that your presence in this world would change the hearts of the people you encounter in it. That they would see the light in your eyes and know that you were sent here for a reason, with a specific purpose; and that meeting you would cause any preconceived notions they had about you, your abilities, and the abilities of others, to fall away - that they would see what I see in you everyday - capability, strength, determination, resilience, value, and worth.
